Stay Focused

One issue that came up in some of my parent conferences was a student spending too much time on frivolous or inappropriate internet sites.  Apparently, our students are not the only ones with this issue.   I just ran across a Chrome extension called  StayFocusd that can be downloaded from the Chrome store, (and has been downloaded 584,090 times already) and wonder if it would be helpful for some of our students.   Its introduction is below:
  • What is StayFocusd?

StayFocusd is an extension for Google Chrome that helps you stay focused on work by restricting the amount of time you can spend browsing time-wasting websites. Once your allotted time for the day has been used up, the sites you have blocked will be inaccessible until the next day.
  • Why do I need StayFocusd?

    Because you're human.

  1. Nice find! I wonder if I could have them all add the extension and then use it to monitor activity. Have you used it at all ? I wonder if it shows you history or if it just restricts certain websites.

  2. I looked at it, but haven't used it. I don't think it monitors, probably because you can do that on your Chrome history. Basically, you select a website or sites - say youtube, and then set access for something like Saturday from 9am-11am, and that's the only time you can access the site (using your Chrome account). I wouldn't do it as a class activity, but rather set it up with a specific child and hs/her parents, discussing it as a strategy to help resist temptation- sort of like freezing your AmEx card in a block of ice or buying your ice cream in pints rather than half gallons(-:
